RULE OF THREE

by Jan Martens & NAH

RULE OF THREE takes as its starting point our ability to quickly switch from one impression to another. A collection of scenes echoes the fragmentary experience of reality that results from this overload of stimuli. It is a danced performance that is somewhere between a concert and a collection of short stories written with bodies, light, music, costumes, and text.

An untamed meditation that – like our times – is based on contrasts: between stillness and explosion, between precision and intuition, between heart and reason. For RULE OF THREE, Jan Martens collaborates with American producer and drummer NAH, whose music consists of live and programmed drums mixed with found sounds and manipulated samples. The three performers engage in dialogue with NAH’s eclectic musical composition on stage, pushing the sensory stimulation ever further.

For her performance in RULE OF THREE Courtney was named the ‘First heroine of La Bâtie’ 2018 by Le Temps (CH) and Female Performer of the Year 2017 by Sceneweb (FR).

‘In this purification rite, where the performers combine the endurance of a trail runner with the agility of a wrestler, Courtney May Robertson is breathtaking in her precision and freedom. See her on the front lines. Toes glued to the ground, she endures blows: her face contorts into a mask of terror, her body buckles, then fights back. It’s a brawl, a passage through hell, a drowning, and a rebirth.’

– Alexander Demidoff, Le Temps

“An eclectic hyperdance…In the thrilling interplay between dance and music, Martens captures the mindset of our hectic times: routinely numbed by ever-new stimuli, fragmented, channel-surfing, lacking in concentration.”

– ★★★★ Charlotte De Somviele, De Standaard
