HUNTER

by Courtney May Robertson

HUNTER critically examines pervasive misogynistic roles assigned to women in three key ‘Body Genres’ in Film: Pornography, Horror and Melodrama. Together with her hyper-realistic life-sized doppelgänger in doll form, Courtney May Robertson weaves a tapestry of images in which the grotesque, (sexual) perversion and emotional excess become triumphant symbols for bodily autonomy and empowerment. What unfolds is a complex relationship with the Self.

The duo – one of flesh and blood, the other crafted from foam and silicone – map out the internal torments and ecstasies of an individual in conflict with an archaic society that upholds purity as a moral standard. Spectators are invited to enter a space where the rigid dichotomy between repulsion and attraction blurs as Courtney enacts ‘life-affirming monstrosities’ upon herself. Propelled by an industrial soundscape composed by ‘Acidic Male’, in HUNTER self-destruction is reimagined as an act of self-preservation.

HUNTER was awarded the VSCD Mime / Performance Prize at the Nederlands Theater Festival and listed in NRC’s 10 Best Dance Performances of 2024

“During her award-winning solo HUNTER […] Robertson manages to mix these extremes of supreme physical control and radically free perversion into a consciousness-expanding trance.”

“What starts as a tender encounter develops into a complex relations (with the Self), in which Robertson addresses various taboos around physicality and erotism with daringly intense images.”

– ★★★★ Annette Embrechts, Volkskrant

Robertson does refer to cult and the spectacular, but her performance is downright introverted. It is her own small body that she steadily makes suffer, theatrically at first, but then in reality. Provocation and spectacle, and the judgments that these two try to solve, are avoided from the very first moment. HUNTER makes tangible in a controlled manner what someone who seeks pain dreams of and where it actually goes.”

Critics Choice Fransien van der Putt, Theaterkrant
